Siemens wins FDA nod for Biograph Vision PET CT system

Siemens Healthineers said today it won FDA clearance for its Biograph Vision positron emission tomography and computed tomography system.

The newly cleared PET/CT scanner features the company’s Optiso ultra dynamic range detector technology, which is based on silicon photomultipliers instead of the industry standard photomultiplier tubes.

Siemens said that the new system reduces the detector’s lutetium oxyorthosilicate crystal elements from 4 x 4 mm to 3.2 x 3.2 mm, which it claims results in a higher spatial resolution and an industry fastest time-of-flight with a temporal resolution of 249 picoseconds.

The newly cleared system also includes features intended to improve quality of patient care, including its FlowMotion multiparametric suite, OncoFreeze and CardioFreeze systems.

“The Biograph Vision represents a major leap in performance beyond any PET/CT system previously manufactured. With this system, we extend the boundaries of PET imaging and help our customers explore a new frontier in precision medicine,” Siemens Healthineers molecular imaging head Jim Williams said in a press release.

In April, Siemens Healthineers said it won FDA clearance for its Somatom Edge plus computed tomography machine.
