Katena expands instrument operation with Micro-Select acquisition

Katena Products, which develops speciality surgical instruments and consumable ophthalmic and optometric products, has acquired surgical instrument developer Micro-Select Instruments.

The financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Established in 2005 by Lenny Moll and Mike Dorenkamp, the acquired company specialises in the manufacturing of high-precision ophthalmic instruments such as forceps, needle holders, and speculums.

The acquisition will enable Katena to scale up its manufacturing operations of precision ophthalmic instruments.

Katena Products CFO Bob Earley said: “The acquisition of Micro-Select is an important addition to Katena’s growing instrument manufacturing operations. Micro-Select will be combined with Katena’s November 2019 acquisition of Micro Medical Instruments in St Louis, MO.”

In addition to precision ophthalmic instruments, Katena offers biologics, medical devices, and optical lenses to hospitals, surgical centres, as well as ophthalmic and optometric offices.

Katena has international customers in over 110 countries. The company is focused on strengthening its position in the ophthalmic surgical market through organic growth and merger and acquisition strategies.

It is owned by Boston-based private equity company Audax Private Equity.

Last year, MellingMedical, which provides medical supplies, equipment, devices, and pharmaceuticals to federal health facilities across the US under the VA’s ‘Veterans First’ procurement programme, signed a vital distribution relationship with Katena.

According to the agreement, Katena’s products were added to MellingMedical’s Federal Supply Schedule, making them available to federal health facilities and their patients.
